Jewish Federations Update on Major Earthquake in Morocco

On Friday evening, September 8, 2023 a magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck Morocco. A quake this devastating has not hit this region for over a decade. 44 miles south of Marrakech, the earthquake’s epicenter overwhelmed the rural town of Ighil, in the Al Haouz province. Men, women, and children were jolted awake as buildings in their community collapsed into rubble, becoming unrecognizable. 2,500 lives have already been taken, and the death toll is expected to rise. The World Health Organization said more than 300,000 people have been affected by the disaster. Mountainous villages and towns are struggling to receive aid as rescuers and emergency response teams scramble to reach the remote areas.

Communities across Morocco need our help.

The waves of impact are only beginning. When there is a need for collective action, Jewish Federations are there. Thanks to the collective impact of our Federation system, our partners can be there on the ground, quickly assessing the needs and supporting people in their darkest hours.

From food and critical supply distribution to urgent medical resources, your support will help us to reach and provide life-saving assistance to thousands of earthquake survivors from the Jewish community and beyond in the critical weeks ahead.

As the needs are still evolving, please use the materials below to urge your community to support the emergency response efforts following the Moroccan earthquake.
