Jewish Federation Statement on Shooting in Buffalo Supermarket

Dear Friends,

The Jewish Federation of Western Connecticut stands in solidarity with the Black community in the wake of the horrible racially motivated shooting in Buffalo. We mourn the lives of the 10 people who were killed and pray for the quick healing of those who were injured. We understand, however, that hateful actions of this nature are felt well beyond the victims and their families. They affect the entire targeted group, no matter where they happen to live.

This particular terrorist is, apparently, an adherent of the Great Replacement conspiracy. According to the tenets this hateful and illogical theory, Jews are somehow working to replace white people with immigrants and people of color. It is the same conspiracy theory espoused by, among others, the terrorist who murdered 11 worshipers in the Tree of Live Synagogue in Pittsburgh in 2018.

This latest horrible attack targeting our brothers and sisters in the Black community is a reminder that hate has consequences and cannot be ignored. We must all stand together to fight hate from any source and no matter who is targeted. We owe that to the victims of this hateful attack, to their families and to our future.
